The organization of children in primary schools

Divergence of the sexes is encouraged in schools, not only by curricula, but also by the way children are organized. Whyte (1983) illustrates this with the following examples: many schools, built in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, still retain separate ‘girls’ and ‘boys’ entrances; the sexes are still lined up separately when queueing for activities. They are listed separately in registers; they are seated separately, and where a uniform exists, boys and girls wear different clothes, with girls discouraged or banned from wearing trousers. Differences between male and female are also emphasized in the manner in which teachers address children, reprimanding girls for noisy behaviour, asking boys to lift heavy objects.
